SISTA was formed in 2000, a collaboration between Akabu and AbbaKush. After each working for over 20 years in the reggae industry the two established female bands from West and South London respectively decided to join forces, creating a group featuring the UK’s most prominent female musicians. Their launch at London Dingwalls Club presented a SISTA as a group 14-strong, and featured artistes of all styles including DJ Pepsi, and Trilla Jena, Poetry from Jayzik, and consolidated roots from Sister Aisha. Working with Nicky Ezer of Culture Promotions, they toured the UK, and played major international events including Summer Jam (Germany), Rototom Sunsplash (Italy), Exit Festival (Serbia), Soca Festival (Slovenia), and the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland) at which their CD Live at Montreux Jazz Festival was recorded. On stage SISTA have worked with the likes of Queen Omega, Empress Aeyola, Sylvia Teller; not forgetting the brothers, Michael Prophet, Benjamin Zephaniah, Don Ricardo and touring with Prince Allah. In 2002 after the sad passing of lead singer Vyris Edghill, SISTA released the single Blessings and completed an album of the same name. Guest artists include Peter Hunningale, Vivian Jones, Prince Malachi, Colour Red, Brave Heart, and Tony Roots. This is due for release this year, and an album of SISTA works is in the pipeline. In 2005 they received critical acclaim for their performance at Rebel Salute in Jamaica, and are featured on the Rebel Salute Roots DVD. As individual artists come and go, and Angela Wynter (lead singer) followed her first love of acting when she landed a role in the popular BBC soap, Eastenders, the band now have six core members. Each member of SISTA is multi-talented, and can be seen on stage or in the studio as session musicians, or working on individual projects.
